But it wasn’t until she hit her mid-20s that Carla’s life took a dramatic turn. Diagnosed with breast cancer, she faced an uphill battle against the disease – but refused to give up. In fact, through her fight against cancer, Carla discovered newfound strength and resilience, which she put to use rebuilding her life after cancer took everything else away from her.

From a very young age, Carla knew she wanted to be something great. She started off working as a cashier at the local 7-Eleven and then went on to become the assistant manager at a grocery store. Despite all the challenges she has faced in her life, she has never given up on her dreams.

In 2008, Carla was diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer. Despite the odds being stacked against her, she fought hard and won remission from cancer in 2010. However, this didn’t stop her from continuing to work and pursue her goals. In 2013, she opened her own business – a consignment shop – which has been doing well ever since.

Through it all, Carla has remained determined and optimistic. She is an inspiration to not only herself but others who are facing difficult challenges in their lives too.

Adversity and Resilience

In her early twenties, Carla Diab was living in a refugee camp in Sudan. She and her family had to flee their home due to the ongoing civil war. Carla’s mother was pregnant at the time and they had to leave everything behind. They were lucky enough to be accepted as refugees by Canada and arrived in Toronto in 2006.

Carla started out working odd jobs while she looked for a way to learn English. She quickly realized that education was key to helping her overcome any obstacles life would put in her way. In 2009, she graduated from Ryerson University with a degree in marketing. This allowed her to start her own business, but it also came with many challenges.

Despite being new to Canada, Carla quickly learned how to navigate bureaucracy and find resources to help her succeed. Her business flourished and she soon had several employees. However, when the global recession hit in 2008, many businesses struggled and hers did too. Despite this setback, Carla refused to give up on herself or her company. For as long as Carla Diab can remember, she’s battled adversity. Growing up in a family of eight children in Haiti, Carla and her siblings had to fight for everything they had. Despite the hardships they faced, Carla and her siblings were determined to make something of themselves. They worked hard and studied hard, hoping one day they could escape their impoverished home country and find a better life.

In 2005, when Carla was just 21 years old, she finally received the opportunity to begin a new life in America. She and her family packed up their belongings and moved to Florida, ready to start anew. Sadly, their dreams were quickly dashed when they lost everything they had in the devastating Hurricane Katrina.

Despite the challenges life has thrown at her again and again, Carla has never given up on herself or her dreams. She’s done everything she can to build a foundation for herself and her family that will last through any adversities life might bring them. Today, Carla is a successful businesswoman who has used her experiences to help others overcome adversity too. She’s an advocate for refugees’ and immigrants’ rights, working tirelessly to ensure everyone has access to opportunity no matter where they come from.
